Ghosts a Rattlin’

An original song

I wrote this song thinking about old friendships that have turned bitter. It’s strange how at one point in your life, certain people feel essential and you’re sure you’ll be close forever. Then something happens, you fall out, and you never speak again.

This song explores that feeling. It’s as if all those good times never existed. And yet they did exist. They’re just buried beneath the weight of what came after. It raises a question: should bitterness be allowed to erase the good?

To me the ghosts are impressions. These people are no longer in our lives, but the imprint they left still lingers. In some way, they continue to shape who we are.

Lyrics

About 3000 miles ago

And 20 years away

I had friendships I thought would last

Oh Lord

They all hit the highway

Through gritted bitter teeth

No tenderness to yield

When sharpened words become unsheathed

Those wounds long now have healed

But all those ghosts

Oh all those ghosts

All those ghosts

Rattlin’ around

Tender moments still remain

High above the clouds

Like the light trying to break through

A dark and hardened shroud

And all those ghosts

Oh all those ghosts

All those ghosts

Rattlin’ around
