Love in the Winter Time

an original song

The part of Scotland I live in doesn’t get much snow. So seeing the snow storm hitting earlier this week back home rally made me miss a bangin’ New England Nor’easter. Don’t get me wrong: shovelling sucks, face numbing cold sucks. Slipping on ice sucks. And trying to park your car on clogged streets with dirty 5 foot snow banks sucks. I remember the agony.

I wrote “Love in the Winter Time” during one of these Nor’easters in Maine.

There’s something about a proper winter storm back home that’ stays with you. In Portland, Maine when the snow comes down hard and the wind starts howling off the ocean, the city doesn’t shut down the way you might expect. People bundle up and head out anyway. Cafés stay open. Streets stay alive. You’ll see folks walking everywhere, scarves pulled up, cheeks red from the cold. You might even spot someone cross-country skiing straight through downtown like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

The song came from a feeling a walking through a snow storm not with dread, but with purpose. When you’re on your way to see someone you love, the weather becomes background noise. Snow piling up on the sidewalks doesn’t slow you down. Wind whipping down the street doesn’t bother you. The cold sharpens everything, but love softens it.

Lyrics

Walking down the road
I’m feeling fine
I’m happy cause I’m ‘bout to meet
That love of mine
Don’t really care that it’s snowing outside
Thought of love puts a new
SPRING in my stride

I can’t wait to see her
I can’t wait to hold her
It’s been a few days
And those days have grew colder

Gonna stair at those deep blue eyes
Don’t really matter what’s
Falling from the skies

I’m in love
I’m in love
In the winter time
Nor’easter coming down
It’s nasty out there
Into each other’s arms we’ll climb

I’m in love
I’m in love
In the winter time
Nor’easter coming down
It’s nasty out there
Into each other’s arms we’ll climb

I really hope the cafe
where we’re gonna me
Is open cause that snow
Is getting really deep
Gonna drinks some hot cocoa
And we’ll hold hands
Stair out the window
Watch the snowflakes land

That wind’s whipping hard
It’s blowing down the street
But inside the fire’s cozy
Cause we’re packed up so neat
With a love by my side
In a winter storm
It’s better than the Gulf
Where the waters are warm

I’m in love
I’m in love
In the winter time
Nor’easter coming down
It’s nasty out there
Into each other’s arms we’ll climb

I’m in love
I’m in love
In the winter time
Nor’easter coming down
It’s nasty out there
Into each other’s arms we’ll climb
