Runaway Bass

The original idea for "Runaway Bass" was an alligator playing a fiddle and accidentally sawing it in half with his bow. I struggled to draw the alligator and fiddle, so I switched to a bass instead. Once I started animating the character playing, the concept evolved naturally and the bass seemed to take on a life of its own, literally running away from him.

I had so much fun making this animation. I began by animating the character and the bass twirling, but when I wasn’t sure what to do next, I asked myself: "What would make me laugh the most?" The answer: the bass escaping the poor musician. For this project, I used Retro Supply Co. Colour Lab halftone brushes, giving it a mid-century comic vibe that fits the playful tone of the animation.
